We believe the person who owns the build should never be the last to know. Everything else is a consequence of that sentence. Here's how we learned it. ### The tools Our software colleagues had GitHub, Jira and continuous deployment. We tracked billion-dollar builds in spreadsheets, predicted yields on instinct, and ran global supply chains over email and WhatsApp. ### The Friday deck The slip showed up in a weekly review, after the easy fix was gone. By then the choice was air freight or a new date, and both were made by whoever was still awake at 3am. ### The CM The contract manufacturer knew first, every time. What they knew arrived as an email, three days later, summarized by someone with a reason to round up. ### The decision We knew what the tool should do because we'd needed it for ten years. Every screen in Capibara answers a question a CEO has asked one of us. So we built it. WHY A CAPYBARA A capybara lets birds sit on it. It sits in the water while everything around it panics. Not adjectives. Each of these decides an argument, and each one has cost us something at least once. 01 ### Say what a VP would say out loud If a sentence needs a word the buyer wouldn't use, it's rewritten. That goes for the site, the deck, and the pull request. 02 ### Put the hard thing in writing The slip, the day it starts, with the number next to it. Early and wrong beats late and right, and both beat quiet. 03 ### We've slipped too Every program we ran slipped somewhere. We remember which morning we found out. That's what we're building against. 04 ### Ship what's real The site says what's built. The roadmap says what isn't. Nobody here has to defend a feature that doesn't exist yet. 05 ### Stay the calmest one in the room We flag the trend and let the bad day go, for customers and for each other. The calm is the product, not the packaging. 06 ### Leave the door open Customer data leaves with the customer. Ideas leave with the person who had them. We keep people with the work, not the contract.
